I told them, things happen in football and I want them to look in the mirror, not just two seconds but longer, and see how they can contribute on the way up. “I told them as professionals to look in the mirror and be ultra-critical. There must be desire to play. If you don’t have it, knock on my door and we’ll talk…briefly. We have to show to ourselves, to the club and to the fans that the team has a big desire to wash away the last half year and go up to the next coming games. If we do that, the results will follow. “I know the fans will support the team as they did briefly during some executions of the last game. The...

The 64-year-old is coming under increasing pressure at the Theatre of Dreams, with his side currently on a six-match winless run. Jose Mourinho’s availability has left United officials tempted to bring in the former Chelsea coach, while Ryan Giggs is another option. Mata’s been a mainstay in United’s side since last February but Herrera – much to the annoyance of supporters – has struggled to nail down a first-team spot since his £28.5million move from Athletic Bilbao in 2014. And the Times claim that the pair will consider quitting the club if Van Gaal’s still at the helm in January.

The defender further disclosed that last season was very though and as humans, the players cannot be expected to perform every week, but is confident of an upturn in their flagging fortunes. “There are some great memories and I don’t think we should forget the manner in which we won the Premier League, leading from the start, which was an unbelievable achievement for everyone at the club,” he told Chelsea magazine. “The flip side, as always with football, is that it’s a game of two halves – and we’ve had a difficult period. Last season was fantastic, this season has been tough, but we’re looking to turn that around. We’re working hard to make things right. “Not every single minute of your career will go well, individually and collectively, and not every season will go how you want it to, b...

From foes to friends: Jose Mourinho and Claudio Ranieri buried hatchet after years of hostility, and now face each other again as struggling Chelsea visit in-form Leicester

Image
By Jose Mourinho’s mathematics, Claudio Ranieri should be almost 80 years old. The Chelsea manager aimed a stinging barb at his counterpart when their hostilities were at their height in 2008, branding him ‘almost 70’ and ‘too old to change his mentality’ when they were at rival Serie A clubs. Ranieri, then in charge of Juventus, was 56. He only turned 64 in October. They are a combustion of styles and personalities and it has made for a lively relationship. Mourinho forever the outspoken antagonist with self-confidence brimming into arrogance. Ranieri older, more mature and with touch of class and self-awareness.

Arsene Wenger sends message to Arsenal star Olivier Giroud: Watch your back!ARSENE WENGER has warned hat-trick hero Olivier Giroud he will be axed for crunch games this season.

Wenger has told Giroud that he will not keep his place And the Arsenal boss admitted he wasn’t sure how Giroud would handle being left out. Giroud’s treble at Olympiakos on Wednesday booked the Gunners place in the Champions League knockout stages. But Wenger stressed the France star’s lack of pace means he will left out certain matches, with the pacier Theo Walcott selected as central striker instead. Wenger made the switch for the crucial 2-0 victory at home to Bayern Munich in October when he knew his men would be on the back-foot and would need to try to catch the Germans on the break. And although Giroud looks likely to keep his place at Aston Villa on Sunday, he faces being sacrificed for the visit of title rivals Manchester City eight days later “If you go on counter-attack of course he is not the kind of player that you want or select first” Arsene Wenger “If you go on counter-attack of course he is not the kind of player that you want or select first,” said Wenger....

Image
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has been given a suspended one-match stadium ban and fined £50,000 by the Football Association for comments made about match officials. Mourinho had claimed officials were "afraid" to award his team penalties after Robert Madley denied Chelsea a spot-kick in a 3-1 loss to Southampton. The FA charged that his comment simply bias on the part of a match official". Mourinho's ban will only be enforced if he repeats the offence within a year. The home defeat by Southampton was Chelsea's fourth loss in the defending champions' opening eight Premier League games of the season and left them 10 points behind leaders Manchester City and four points above the relegation zone. Speaking after the game, Mourinho had said the Blues were "always punished" by officials because "there is always a question mark" from the media. "If the Football Association wants to punish me they can. They don't punish other manag...
